PREFACE

The oldest Register of the Alston Parish, which is preserved locally, contains the following entries :

ALSTON.

BAPTISMS. 1706 1727, and a few odd items on detached and defaced leaves.

MABRIAGES.

1701 1727.

BURIALS.

1701—1727.

GARRIGILL.

BAPTISM8.

1708 1729. There is also a most unique feature. I have never heard of the like in any other Parish. "A distinct Register of Nonconformists." This covers the period from 1704 to 1728.

The "Nonconformists" were (1) the Presbyteri- ans introduced by Burnand of Brampton- or (2) the Independents who followed Reginald Walton,! or (3) both parties. The last suggestion is most likely to be fact.

MARRIAGES.

1699—1730.

BURIALS.

1699-1729.

The Garrigill entries are thus earlier than the Alston ones by about two years.

The present volume contains only the Gam ill section of this old hook."

Besides the original Register there is a co])t/ very carefully executed. This copy is endorsed : " Copy of Register of the Parish of Alston com- mencing 1st Sep. 1706* and ending 4th March, 1729. Copied by order of the Rev. Archdeacon Thorpe, A.D. 1811, by me

John Coulthard."

At the end there is a certificate: "We, the undersigned, having perused and examined this copy, Do Certify it to be a true aDd faithful copy of the Register of the Parish of Alston, or as much so as the Defaced State of the Old Books would admit.

Benjn. Jackson,

Vicar of Alston."

It is a local tradition that all records prior to this date were sent to Durham, and enquiries are being made into the matter.

There are really two books, for the Garrigill parchment is less than the Alston. +This date refers to Alston.

V

Our oldest Begigfa r is not our oldest local record. The most ancient locally preserved writing is found On a tombstone, which reads :

HE ARE LYETfl

THE BODY OF CVTHBERT WATSON

WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE THE 14th

DAY OF SEPTEMBER, 1692.

It. is intended to remove this stone, which has been displaced for many yens, to the interior wall of bh new vestry, where it will be permanently preserved.

As indicating the great interest with which this Register is invested I will refer to some of the family and personal names we rind here.

The first family name is that of Archer. This name can he traced back in the neighbourhood to an early date in the XIII Century. Archbishop Gray (1216-1255) granted to John le Archer 40 acres of land in Allendale in 1228. It has been conjectured that he was the " progenitor of the stock in South Tynedale." We find the Archers established in this Parish early in the XV Century.

Another interesting name is that of Vipond. This is a corruption of the Latin name of one of the Norman followers of the Conqueror— Veteri Ponte— a cognomen which appears as early as 1085. The following facts indicate the association of this nan* with this district :—

IV.

1. The parishes of Alston (including; Garrigill), Knarsdale, Kirkhaugh, Whitfield, Simon burn, and

part of Haltwhistle formed the Franchise of Tyne- dale and was holden by the Kings of Scotland of the Crown of England.

2.— The Manor of Alston and other lands were given to William de Veteriponte by William the Lion King of Scotland. This grant was confirmed by King John on May 10th, 1209.

3. Ivo de Veterieponte gave the " advowson of the Church of Alderstone and the chapel ov gerardegile " to the Canons of Hexham in 1215. This grant received the confirmation of King John.

4. The son of Ivo was Robert. Edward I. re- covered from Robert Veteriponte the manor of Alston.

5. The manor was restored to Nicholas de Veteri- ponte in 1282. He died in 1315, and by an inquest it was found that he died possessed of " the capital messuage in Alderstone," and that he " had 33 tenants in gerardsgill," who held 33 shieldings.

6. These lands, with others, remained in this family until 1443.

A name full of suggestion occurs in the Deaths under the year 1713, that of Reginald Walton. The entrv reads :

M Reginald Walton of Upper Lee House was buried the 4th of August. 1713."

'rv

The grave-stone of this Reginald Walton is a curiosity.

During the restoration of our Church, when the Rev. P. T. Lee, M.A., was Curate-in-charge, a monumental slab, lying in the Churchyard, was brought into the Church for its better preservation, because it is inscribed with a Latin epitaph. It forms part of the Church pavement, but is covered with a mat. It reads as follows :

HIC IACET CORP<$$VS REG ^

INALD WALTON NVP

ER DE VPPER LEEHOVSE

QVI OBIJT PRIMO DIE

AVGVSTI ANNO DOMI.

1713 AETATIS SVEE 93.

The mason in cutting the letters has made a mistake SVEE should be SVAE. Having made this correction, the translation runs : " Here lies the body of Reginald Walton, late of Upper Lee- house, who died on the 1st day of August, in the year of the Lord 1713, in the 93rd year of his age." I have often been asked who Reginald Walton was, but there is nothing in our books and papers to show. One thing has always impressed me as being peculiar, which, perhaps, I can best express in a question : Who, in Garrigill, would appreciate Latin sufficiently to choose a Latin epitaph either

far himself or another?

The question always suggested to my mind the answer that the man with such preferences was not one who had spent all his days among the sheep or game on the fells. Chancellor Ferguson of Carlisle has brought to light some information which perhaps clears up the case. A " Declaration of Indulgence" was issued in 1672 (temp. Charles II.; under which Presbyterians and Congregational- ists took out licences to preach in private houses. Many of these men under the Commonwealth had assumed the charge of Parish Churches and had appropriated their revenues, but had been deposed at the Kestoration (1660). Such were Burnand of Brampton, and Larkham of Cockermouth. Well, in the list of these licences there appears this item : " The house of Eeginald Walton of Alston More (sic) in Cumberland, Congregationalist, 29th June, 1672."

Now, the Eeginald Walton referred to by our Latin tombstone would be 52 years of age in 1672, quite competent as to age to claim licence. Further, a man taking an active part in the civil and religious strife of his day would not be an unlikely man to have a Latin epitaph. The conclusion is that it is possible, if not probable, that the tombstone refers to the Eeginald Walton who took out his licence to preach as a Nonconformist. If this be so, it is certainly remarkable that the tombstone of the first permanently resident dissenter lies within the Church

door. Burnand also lived here but not for long.

The list to which reference is made lies in the Hulls Office, in " The Domestic Entry Book of Chirles II."

These notes must not he considered exhaustive. They are merely given ns illustrating the fact that in these dry looking catalogues of names we have a j)i iceless local history.

One other point is worthy of notice. It will be seen that, m this Register, the name of our village is spelt Garragill, whereas the modern spelling is Garr/gill. The second a is less of a corruption, though it looks unfamilar if not unwelcome, than the accepted i- Garrigill. We all knew- that the ancient name (f our valley is Gerraid's Gill. It would seem that the second a in Garragill is the second vowel of Genaid. Garragill is purer than Garrigill. I find that Palmer adepts the form Garragill in The Tyne and its Tributaries.

It will be obseivcd that Garrigill is sometimes called Gate. Some hold that the word signifies merely "the street," while others trace it to Cattle yeat or pasture. In the latter sense the word has affinity for shielding and shield. I hope to discuss this fully in a later volume.

I have only to add that the capricious and eratic spelling is explained by the fact that the original

manuscript in carefully followed.
